One of the benefits of living in Colorado was that on just about any drive in the mountains, you can come upon scenes like this one -- a deep-blue alpine lake in a lush, green meadow, with a scattering of pines just beyond and jagged peaks in the background. I love the serenity of these upper-elevation ponds, often seeing no other humans for miles.
This particular pond is located west of Mount Evans and a half-hour south of the I-70, off Guanella Pass Road. As remote as this seems, we were just a bit more than an hour's drive from the Denver Metro area. These alpine scenes are some of the reasons we try to return to the Centennial State every summer.
